can't Joe remove that spam ? I suppose it's difficult to check that everyday... but I seen how groups degrade rapidly with that kind of stuff

thanks

OK, the message is removed, and the spammer's photo album is also removed, and the member name has been banned.

Normally I delete the whole message thread, but this time I've kept the thread because coolwolf had added his message to the thread, and I'll also use this opportunity to describe how futile it is trying to combat spam. :-(

Spammers typically sign up with a new member name each time, so banning them doesn't help much.

By just posting their message the spammers ensure that all of the members of "Cindy and Joe" who have requested message board messages in their e-mail will get their spam message. This can't be prevented no matter how diligently I police the site. This is another reason why I discourage the use of that "get the messages in your e-mail" option.

Depending on what my "real life" is involving on any particular day, I may be checking up on "Cindy and Joe" five times during the day, or maybe only once during the day. When Cindy and I are traveling on business or vacation I may only be able to check the site once a week or so. Anyway, from the time the spammer posts his message until I check up on the site and delete the message the spammer's message is there, much to everyone's annoyance.

The only real way to avoid spam is to make the message board "moderated". That means that member's messages do not appear on the board until they are approved by the manager. I don't want to do that because it would greatly reduce the dynamics of discussions here. Often when I check up on "Cindy and Joe" there have been 5 - 10 new messages in a single day, many of them replies to each other within the same day. I'm sure that if I made this message board "moderated" that it would reduce the total number of messages by at least 50%, and I think that's too high a price to pay to get rid of the spam.

What I would really like to see is for MSN Groups to hire some people to combat spam, so that a group manager can not just ban a spammer but report him as a spammer, which would result in MSN Groups filing a complaint with the spammer's ISP and hopefully getting his site shut down. But this is utopia and I'm sure it's not going to happen.

Joe
