Webmaster woes
From: Joe Sent: 29 Sep. 2002 Message 1 of 12
I've just disabled video downloading from Bill Baroud's FTP server because the limit of 10 GB for this month (September) has been reached. This will be opened up again on the 1st of October.
Also, I've just discovered that our "Data Archive" web site is down. Don't know why, hopefully it's just a short-term glitch.
So right now there's not much that's functional of the "Cindy and Joe" stuff on the Internet.
Our "front-end" web site at http://CindyAndJoe.com (only two pages) seems to be working OK.
This MSN group (along with a large number of other MSN groups) has been hit by some strange problem which results in all custom-made pages (such as our Welcome page) being replaced by the "What's New" page. Also, the photo albums aren't working, so you can't view or download any pictures.
On top of that, I discovered recently that MSN has changed the category of this group from People > Romance > Adults to People > Romance > Adults > Personals. I have no idea why, and don't really care much, but this change has also had the side-effect that this MSN group is no longer listed in the MSN groups directory.
Our "Data Archive" web site (http://www.CindyAndJoeArchive.com) is currently down. It has also run out of bandwidth so the video section has been closed since the 21st of Sept. and won't be opened again until around 6 Oct.
Finally, Bill Baroud's FTP server (http://80.88.64.67/CindyJoe) has been closed until the 1st of October.
What a mess! :-)

The "Data Archive" web site is up and running again.
So that's one problem fixed, two MSN problems still outstanding and two bandwidth overload situations waiting for time to pass.

Joe,
My name is MarLee and i manage several sites on MSN. I can answer some of your concerns regarding your webpage problems .... It seems that MSN is no longer allowing ''link backs'' ... which is to say all your design elements must be stored in the resident community. If you have any other questions, would like to view my site, or if i can offer you any help, plz feel free to ask, as i enjoy your community very much.
Sincerley,
SpicierMarLee

SpicierMarLee,
Thank you for your offer. I don't think our current problems have anything to do with "link backs". It seems more likely that there are some servers at the MSN Groups site which have gone down.
The problem affects a lot of groups but not all. It is being discussed on this thread over at the "Community Feedback" group:
http://groups.msn.com/Communityfeedback/general.msnw?action=get_message&ID_Message=332171
What really ticks me off is that the problem has existed for over two days now and MSN Groups has still not provided any explanation or indication of how long the problem will last or what managers should do, if anything.

Good news:
Access to Bill Baroud's FTP server has been opened up again.
Bad news:
One of the MSN problems is even worse than I thought previously. Not only are the photos unavailable here but the documents (files) are also inaccessable. So the usual technique of making the username and password for Bill Baroud's FTP server available via a file in the Documents section can't be used.
As an exception I'm going to post this information in the next message on this thread. (And then delete it again after several days when that password expires.)

I suppose you're all tired of hearing about problems with the "Cindy and Joe" web sites. I sure am tired of having them, believe me. :-(
Our "Data Archive" web site is down again, and the MSN problems drag on.

It's now three days since the really big MSN problem started, and still no official response from MSN Groups. In my opinion this is totally irresponsible, and I've lost just about all my respect for MSN Groups.
By unofficial statistics around 60% of all MSN groups are affected. There are now over 475 messages on this thread http://groups.msn.com/Communityfeedback/general.msnw?action=get_message&ID_Message=332171 at the Community Feedback group. The general consensus is that the problem is really serious and the lack of information from MSN Groups makes it much worse.
I'll try to keep you informed.

Our "Data Archive" web site is up and running again.
Bill Baroud's FTP server is getting overloaded - 1 GB of downloads in only 20 hours! At this rate it will have to be shut down again in one week. Sigh...
Still no word from MSN about the major problem. Are the photos and the videos and other files here gone for good? Nobody knows.

Wow! Cindy and I were just about to leave on our vacation, and I discovered that MSN has finally fixed the problem that has affected this MSN group and a lot of others! That was a nice send-off present! :-)
So now all of the "Cindy and Joe" stuff on the Internet is back in full operation except for video downloading from the "Data Archive" site. That is disabled due to bandwidth overload, and won't be opened up until Cindy and I are back, around the 13th-15th October.

Ups, forgot about that problem, which is still outstanding. But that's no big deal, and I'll look into it more when I get back - if it's still a problem at that time.

Joe ...
Hope all your woes with MSN are fixed, ours are!! Thank goodness, of course, I had remade all our web page openers by that time, but our extensive pic library was saved!!
Sincerely,

Just to be completely consistent I'll mention that the problem described in message 10 (and message 1) on this thread has been resolved. In order to fix it I had to modify the group's "description" (which is listed in the MSN Groups directory) so that two naughty words ("fisting" and "pussy") weren't included ("fiisting" and "pusssy" were OK), and then specify that this group was not to be listed in the directory, and then specify that the group was to be listed in the directory.
So now all of the problems discussed on this thread have been fixed.
Joe
