Problems in downloading: a solution?
From: baro25us Sent: 3 Mar. 2002 Message 1 of 4
Hi everybody, I've possibly a partial solution for downloading problems: I saw if you try to downlod using go!zilla-like programs connection does'nt work, but if you open a video file and start to wach it directly you can save the first Mbyte when the connection invariably falls. The real problem doing that are *.avi files, becouse they usually don't open till end of downloading. If what I'm saying is not wrong (maybe it is, please you try too), it would'nt be bad if it was possible to convert *.avi files to *:mpeg, so we could download at least a piece of those video (I WANT BICH-C!!!)

I can't comment on your suggestion about download techniques. But I know a bit about video compression principles, and I know that converting an AVI to an MPEG is not a good idea, at least not from the technical point of view. A file which has undergone one kind of video compression is not suitable for being uncompressed and then re-compressed using a different kind of video compression. The quality will not be very good.

Effectively, the avi files contain a frame index at the end of the file. So, if your player can't read it, nor rebuild it, it won't play the file.
I know a player who can read and rebuild index "on the fly", but only under linux.
In my windows time, I used a small app who was called pcaedit. It permitted preview and rebuild of the AVI, allowing the index to be rebuild.
I'll take a look to see if I don't have it on a cd somewhere.
Otherwise, there is a tool who is given with the DivX 4 video codec pack which is called "divfix", which purpose is to rebuild this index. I never tried it on files other than divx, but you could give it a try.

I have to agree with baro25us's frustration, using Gozilla or the likes does not in fact allow downloading of many of the movies which I have to agree is rather frustrating.
Can anybody please assist or give us a solution in obtaining these "much desired movies"
Thanks and regards
