Message:
I am having trouble with free drive!
From: mandyln2001 Sent: 06 Sep. 2001 Message 1 of 13
Hey there, I have joined free drive but it wont let me view anything, could there be something that I need to configure? It is like it gets stuck between pages or something, I have tried several times, and it does the same thing each time, maybe my settings need to be ajusted or something, I hope you can help me solve this problem.

Please see the answer I posted on another thread.
If you get a message saying that the download limit is exceeded then there's nothing to do except wait until the indicated time and try again.
If there is another problem tell me more exactly what goes wrong.

Hey Joe,
When I try to click on Cindys file, nothing happens at all, and at the bottom, where it shows the page loading, it will load then do nothing and it keeps doing that like it is trying to connect but it can't, I really don't have a clue to why it is doing that! When I try to click help, still nothing comes up, it is very strange.

Mandy,
I don't really know what to suggest, except to try downloading and installing FreeDrive's FD Desktop program, and see if that works.
Are other members having this problem?

I'm having trouble. When I get the message that bandwidth has been exceeded, I try back at the suggested time. The trouble is that the bancwidth is always exceeded. And when the suggested time rolls around, there is a new time posted.....again and again. Even in the middle of the night. I know that the clips must be popular, but this is rediculus!

I have the same problem as Spencer....have yet to view anything on freedrive. I also have problems even getting to the Cindy and Joe site using Netscape, so I switch over to Explorer...anyone else have this problem?

I'm sorry, but I don't know if there's anything I can do about this.
Cindy and I do want to keep access to this site and the Cindy video clips free of charge. We don't intend to make "Cindy and Joe" into a pay site.
But this is especially problematic when it comes to the Cindy video clips. MSN has reduced the maximum file size here at MSN Communities to only 1 MB, and many people find it impossible to download video clips from here anyway. Most of the free disk space sites have gone bankrupt as part of the "dot com" crash, in part because income from banner ads has gone way down. FreeDrive has reduced the amount of storage that is really free, removed the ability to publicly share free storage, and established download limits.
You may not realize it, but Cindy and I are paying $10 a month for the "PowerDrive" space we have at FreeDrive. We'd rather do that than have the hassle of trying to figure out how to get you members to pay for access to the Cindy video clips.
FreeDrive claims that the $10 a month provides us with 750 MB of bandwidth per day, and if this is true then it's a pretty good deal. But if FreeDrive is constantly indicating "download limit exceeded" then perhaps something is wrong. I do, in fact, have the suspicion that if a download is started and then aborted, that the entire file size counts against the download limit, even if only 10% was actually downloaded.
But unless someone knows of some other place were we can get free, or almost free, disk space with a very high download bandwidth, then I don't know what to do.
Apparently some people have been able to get the Cindy video clips from FreeDrive.

Joe-
I didn't realize you were paying for the "Power Drive" service. That is quite noble of you. And I am sure members such as myself really appreciate it (I do!). I can't imagine that there is 750Mb downloaded each day, but then again you never know. I think your idea of partial downloads is a valid one.
I suggested freedrive in the first place, cause it seemed like a good answer at the time. Another site that I found out about is
http://www.whalemail.com/
I admit that I have not used this site. BUT, I was thinking, what you might be able to do is set up an email list of whalemail users. I.E. everyone who wants videos, get a whalemail account, and then you just send out the movie to the whole lot.
It's just an idea, and it might be more hassle than it's worth, I do not know. The only real alternative of course, is to host an FTP site. I would certainly do it, BUT, my ISP is the university, and I don't want to risk that kind of exposure with traffic into my machine.

Alright, I should research more next time I open my mouth. I thought whalemail was free unless you got more storage. I guess it is not.
Well, back to the drawing board

Hey Joe,
All that I know, is that I joined freedrive and when I go there, and click on anything even help, it comes up as error on this page and nothing happens, and it is very frustrating! I just dont understand why I cant do anything, it is like there is a block or something! oh well, I guess I wont be able to see the video. Thanks anyway. I know that there is not anything you can do about it.

Mandy,
I thought of one thing that you could try. Doubt that it will help, but it's worth trying.
First clear your browser's cache. Click on Tools - Internet Options - Temporary Internet Files - Delete Files.
Then delete any cookies that are associated with FreeDrive. Click on Tools - Internet Options - Temporary Internet Files - Settings - View Files, and delete anything that looks like it could be a FreeDrive cookie.

Hi all,
I too was having a load of problems with "freedrive", but i finally sorted it !!!!
What was happening to me was when i tried to download a file, my browser would just hang. This happened with both IE5.5 and netscape.
They way i sorted it was to first log on to freedrive.
Then click on the "options" tab
Then look for a tick box that says "auto-download"
Un-tick the box
Then click on up-date my profile tab
Now when you try to download a file, it will still open up the new window but in the new window will be a tab that says "doenload now"
Right click over the "download now" tab and "save to disk"
This worked for me so let me know how you get on.
Lee
p.s this only works if the banwith hasnt been exceeded also sorry if ive missed anything out im in a bit of a rush

Hey All,
I have done everything to get this site to work for me and it still is not working, I don't know why, I have even emiled them at the site, and they have tried to help, but nothing is working so I give up, it more agervating than anything, plus they sent a letter stating that they won't be giving 5mg of free space any more, so I am not going to worry about it anymore, but thanks for trying to help! Have a great day.
