Message:   Combining Mpegs

From: rocs     Sent: 30 Nov. 2000     Message 1 of 2

Does anyone know how to combine mpeg files? I'm sure there is probably a program out there that will do it but I'm not sure where to find it.

rocs,

It turns out that MPEG files can be combined quite easily. (This is not true for AVIs or Quick Time movies - they have to be combined via a video editing program.)

There are two catches: The first is that all of the MPEGs that you combine must have the exactly same characteristics, for example frame size (320 x 240 or whatever) and audio (rate 32 k or 44 k or whatever, and format 16 or 8 bit, stereo or mono). All these characteristics must be the same.

To combine compatible MPEGs you can just use the DOS Copy command, as follows:

copy /b file1 + file2 + file3 + ... + filen resultfile

For example:

copy /b cindyv01.mpg + cindyv02.mpg cindycombined.mpg

If you don't feel comfortable using DOS commands, then I can recommend a shareware program that only costs $20. It is called Ordix Mpack 2000, and can be found here:

http://www.ordix.com/mpack/index.htm

The second catch is that there is a bug in Windows Media Player version 6.4 that sometimes prevents these combined files from being played properly. This bug affects the combination of cindyv01.mpg and cindyv02.mpg, of course :-(

I have been told that other versions of Windows Media Player (for example the new version 7) do not have this bug. Alternatively I can recommend another MPEG player program called XingMPEG Player. This program costs $29 and can be found here:

Hope this information helps.

Yours,
Joe
