Downloading pics with Netscape
From: Joe Sent: 26 Dec. 1999 Message 1 of 3
There is a problem involved in downloading pics from MSN Web Communities if you are using a Netscape browser.
To download pics using Netscape, do as follows:
1. Enlarge the pic, i.e., don't try to download the thumbnail.
2. Right-click on the pic and select Save Image As.
3. A file navigation dialog box opens up. Navigate to the proper folder on your hard disk. (This only has to be done the first time.)
4. Now comes the strange part. Netscape has suggested "fetch.dll" as the default file name. YOU MUST CHANGE THIS NAME. Type in the proper file name for the picture, for example "cindy300.jpg".
5. Click on Save to download the file.
Except for point 4 the above procedure is the same as you would use at any other web site. Point 4 is unusual, and is apparently due to an incompatibility between MSN Web Communities and Netscape's browsers.
Yours, Joe

A reply to this one, two and a half years later!
Dear Joe,
I followed your instructions to the letter, but still I get a blanc page. Either that, or I get a lot of static. MSN appears to scramble their communities' pictures, but I know a decoder does exist. The only thing is, I can't find it anywhere. Anyone here who can point my nose in the right direction?
Thanks fellow constituents.

Well, my mother always used to say, "better late than never!"
I'm sorry, but I don't have Netscape installed on my PC any more, so I have no idea what the current situation is. Perhaps some other member who uses Netscape can help.
But I can assure you that MSN does not "scramble" or "encode" the pictures. So your problem must be something else.
Joe
