Message:   Stretching w/ speculum

From: niplvr     Sent: 8 Aug. 2002     Message 1 of 2

Has anyone ever experimented with or used a speculum for stretching? Does anyone know how wide they will spread?

Thank you

Hello Niplvr!

There are many different sizes and sorts of speculae. There are clear acrylic ones and there are metal ones. The Acrylic ones might be more comfortable and fun to look at but the metal ones are probably quite a bit tougher and less easy to break. We got ourselves a metal (size large :-) speculum and found it to be kinda fun for other games. Fully inserted it will stretch the opening some 2.7 inches (6+ cm) and the tip of it will spread to some 6 inches (15 cm). However, trying to use the tip to spread the opening didn't work. It was hard to keep there and it was just not sturdy enough but would bend.

www.stockroom.com has got both acrylic and metal and in several different sizes too. They even have a couple of special 'anal' speculae. This kind spreads the prongs straight out rather than the 'normal' way in which the greatest spread occurrs at the tip. However, not even the 'large' size opens more than 2.5 inches (6 cm) and may be too small for you :-)

As I can see it there are two major cons in using a speculum for any greater spreading. The first is the fact that the greatest spread is at the tip of the instrument. The second is that the muscles you are attempting to stretch simply are too strong. Plastic would probably break and metal would bend under that kind of pressure.

I've been told that there are sturdier kinds to be found at a vet's store. This, of course, presents its own set of problems... :-)

Sorry 'bout the rambling answer but I hope you can find some useful info in there.

Have fun!
nixoff
