Question for zappaz:coccygodynia
From: Thalia Sent: 16 April 2001 Message 1 of 4
Can this be caused by fisting? I freelance from home & thus are on my behind in front of my computer pretty much 8 hrs. a day, 5 days a week, aside from short breaks to attend to household tasks.
So, my question is, can this tail bone pain be caused by fisting, sitting too long on my rump, or a combination of the two?
Both events (the successful addition of fisting to our repetoire) and the stay-at-home freelance writing pretty much occured simulataneously. We are not constant fisters, as I want to stay tight, and I exercise (love those kegels!), but I do work a full 40 hr. week at the keyboard, as well.
I know it's coccygodynia, my physician just diagnosed it. (I was afraid something was wrong with the colon in that area, but doc assures me this is coccyx pain is quite common.) I'd just like to know if there's a link, or if it's coincidental and I'm not asking my personal physician. My sex life is none of his business. Everything else, okay, but between the sheets is private (except here, I guess, where TMI rules the day, thank goodness!)
Thanks for your help.

Thalia,
I have seen many cases of Coccydynia. This is a condition where the joint between the coccyx (tailbone) and the sacrum is painful (like a severe arthritis in that joint). It is usually caused by a fall on the tailbone. but sometimes is caused by sitting on a hard surface. Other times it just happens. It is easily diagnosed by moving the tailbone, and the movement causing pain in that joint.
If sitting on a softer surface is not effective in relieving the condition, other measures must be tried. The majority of the time, a shot or two (into the sacro-coccygeal joint) using a mixture of anesthetic and cortisone will clear it up. I have only had three cases where injections would not clear up the problem. In those cases, I used a local anesthetic and made a little incision over the coccyx bone.. then I completely removed the tail bone with total relief of the pain following surgery.
I have not seen the condition in those who do fisting, however, I can see where fisting would move the tailbone and cause pain if the condition were already present. Some ladies have a rather short distance from the front of the pelvic opening (the pubic bone) to the tailbone. A fist in the vagina there would tend to move the tailbone and if you had coccydynia, it would hurt some. Some others have a very long distance front to back of the boney opening (I have seen over 8 inches) and this would not be a problem.
I do not think that fisting would _cause_ the problem.. but it might make it hurt... just like sitting on a hard surface would. Causing the condition probably would require a very sudden forceful injury.. like sitting down suddenly on a hard surface! Once present, the condition could hurt from anything that moved the tailbone. Those that have the tailbone removed will find it adds about another inch to the front-to-back pelvic opening. With no bone to move, that would likely relieve any backward pressure pain and allow a larger boney pelvic opening at the same time.
I would recommend you follow your doctor's advice. Most likely, just sitting on a softer surface, or the injections will clear up your problem. You can always have the little minor surgery I mentioned, to remove the offending tail bone.. should simpler things not work. People really don't need tail bones.. LOL

Thanks, zappaz. Actually, now that I think about it, just a couple of days after I got my hood pierced, I tripped over some stuff my husband had piled at the top of the basement stairs and landed hard on my butt. At the time, I was just relieved it was on my bottom & not further up ; ). I bet that is what did it. Thanks for the advice!

Thalia,
It sounds like your fall could well be the cause. In that case after a few weeks, usually it clears up by itself.
If it persists, you could have the injections. The surgery is a last resort, but usually a minor thing to do if you need it.
I have seen coccydynia lasting a few days after a delivery... where the pelvic opening was quite small, and a large baby's head impinged on the tailbone coming out.
Too bad people have tailbones, as without them, it would make the lower pelvic boney opening about an inch larger in the front to back direction... LOL
