Message:   Muscles cramping after orgasm

From: Joe     Sent: 21 Aug. 2000     Message 1 of 2

Here's a question I've gotten from a female pen-pal:

She says that occasionally (approx. twice a year) after she's masturbated that her vaginal muscles (and a few times the muscles around her anus) cramp at the end of her orgasm. It's rather painful for a while and then eventually the cramp goes away.

Is this common? Is there any way to prevent it? Or to reduce the amount of time that the cramp lasts?

Joe

Joe, both men and women experience muscle cramps of perineal muscles (usually pubococcygeal in women and bulbocavernosus muscles in men). This if fairly common and like other muscles that are overused, (especially if the overuse is between periods of less use) the cramps are (or charlie horses) more apt to happen. Often lactic acid build up in overused muscles will trigger the tight contractions of the muscles, and is quite painful. Resting a few days and building up usage may be needed, if they recur. This is the reason you can get a sore back from lifting or leg cramps after over exercise (especially if your routine or your job does not use those muscles often). I am sure many in the Club have had such a painful cramp in their perineal regions after repeated orgasm. If you are subject to this wait a awhile between orgasms for the lactic acid in the muscles to dissipate. I often recommended (over the counter) Benadryl pills with some relief. Calcium also might help. Narcotics are not needed and just acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin will help. If the contraction is so severe it tears muscle fibers, sometimes an ice pack is needed. There can be other causes like hyperventilation (breathing too fast) and low blood calcium levels, as well as a long list of less common conditions. zappaz1@exicte.com or zappaz1@hotmail.com
