Perineal massage...
From: trident70 Sent: July 31, 2000 Message 1 of 4
To whom it may concern (Zappas) :0), my question is: to lower the risk of tearing during labour is it possible to do some kind of massage on the lower part of the vaginal opening? I've read about it but thought somebody in this community don't just talk about it.

I have already posted (someplace on this site) information about this.
Basically it consists of using fingers in the vagina and pressing downward or to the sides and then sliding the fingers outward or rubbing the side walls of the opening. Sometimes for faster stretching (like right at the time of a vaginal delivery) I use fingers of one hand 180 degrees opposite the fingers of the other hand (for counter traction). This often avoids cutting or tearing of the vagina during the delivery. This perineal massage is now being recommended to be used long before a vaginal delivery to avoid the same problems (African tribes have use this method for untold centuries).
Even many years ago, some that I delivered used this method to prepare for birth (including one that very easily had a 14 pound baby) with no problems at all delivering their first babies.
Cupping the fingers inside the rim sometimes works better. Use Kegels to avoid looseness between stretchings.

Dear Zappaz
Sorry for not looking through the previous postings. Anyway, thank you very much for your comments and We'll start to practice at once no matter what the OB says. We believe in it and thats the point, basically. Or ?
Bye, Trident

Many OB doctors are now starting to put their patients on a program to use this "perineal massage" before delivery. So you can ask him/her.
Some worry about looseness without the Kegels, and are hesitant. Many husbands are reluctant to do it for their wives is another problem.
