I read in a forum about tapioca homemade lube.
2 spoons of tapioca into a glass of hot water.....

I've never heard of the tapioca recipe before. About the only common household item I can think of which would fit the bill is Crisco. I've never used it, but have heard that it's an excellent lube. There is a trade-off... don't quite remember what... possibly it's messy to clean up...? *shrug*
Another option to consider (if 'cheap' is your goal) is to get some J-Lube. Again, not something I've tried, but definitely on my "to do" list. It's a powder that you mix with water. An 8 oz container will make 6-8 gallons. So that should last you a while. (Just make as much as you think you'll need for a session!) The cleanup (read: break down the molecular structure) involves sprinkling some salt into the mix. Strange but true.

Lubricants can be divided into two categories: water-based and oil-based. For vaginal use water-based is recommended. Oil-based (and that includes Crisco) can mess up the vagina's bacteria, which is a bad thing. (The vagina always has some bacteria and this is the way it is supposed to be, as long as they are the right kind of bacteria and the right amount.)
Also, water-based lubes are easier to clean up afterwards than oil-based.
Crisco is apparently a favorite for anal fisting.

Never tried it but for chemicals like glycerine or methylcellulose see:
http://www.chemistrystore.com/glycerin.htm
Anyway, water based starch or methylcellulose-glycerine like products such as KY are proven to be the "golden standard" for vaginal stretching.
I would guess that tapioca flour at about $2+ a pound would even work better than the gritty tapioca... but would have to be mixed in very small quantities, as such starches spoil and grows bacteria if not refrigerated or has a preservativ added, so I would be afraid to mix large quantities due to storage problems. The trouble with such products is they tend to dry and need more moisture added to keep them slippery (remember how you made paper glue from different flour starches when you were a kid... lol)
Some envelope companies even use (cassava) tapioca flour-starch to make glue for sealing envelopes as it tastes good when licked.
For any such homemade stuff... you would be on your own!
