I remember when vaginal fisting was entirely a "closet activity"
and nobody at all talked about it. It was still being done, and
I knew quite a few that did it even then. Now that it is gradually
beginning to gain some respect, we may find out the true incidence.

Dr. R.L.Dickinson in the early part of this century had some
perspective on fisting, and realized it was done very much more
than was generally realized. He was a very progressive gynecologist
for his time, and he was not embarrassed to talk or publish about
anything. Even before Kinsey did his work, he published many things
on human sexuality.

He once decided to take 100 of his patients in a row and test how
much they stretch vaginally.. using just a light inward pressure
of various diameter balls. He had various sized heavy glass balls
blown by glass blowers and using his set of ball "testers". He set up
a prospective study to test and publish the next 100 cases he examined
in his office. He tested each of the 100 consecutive cases with just
light pressure of the lubricated balls against the introitus (or
vaginal opening). If the ball would not enter the vagina easily... with
no discomfort, he recorded the last size that would.

He published his series with figures to demonstrate the ball sizes
that comfortably entered the vagina in each of his 100 consecutive
cases. "Very surprisingly" the "two largest" in his series still had
their hymenal rings "still intact" (both still unbroken but stretched).
He mentioned in his publications a lot about vaginal stretching and
commented that he thought it caused no injury if gradual and often done.
In one of his publications, he commented about the many women he had
seen who had an intact and unbroken hymenal ring but still had a very
distensible introitus (or opening) and could still do very large vaginal
stretching, but at the same time they had a virginal or "unbroken hymen".
He concluded that the reason was very gradual and frequent stretching
that never allowed the hymen to break. In that regard he stated:

".. under gradual and oft repeated stretching, the elasticity or
distensibility can become sufficient to allow the passage of the
full sized head (I am sure he meant to say full sized "infant head")
or adult hand without nick of hymen or injury to associated structures."

Neither of the two largest ladies in his 100 series (I mentioned) had
ever been married but both comfortably took balls near 4 inches in
diameter. He did not speculate on how much they might stretch "with
discomfort" :-) Those two ladies would have had "broken" hymenal rings
if they had not been into frequent and gradual stretching leading to
probable fisting to account for their ability to comfortably take the
diameter objects they did.

It seems to me that if "only those two" out of a hundred did fisting,
that the incidence way back in Dickinson's time was much higher that
people "even today" give this fetish credit for. My personal guess as
to the incidence of vaginal fisting (judging from my part of the world)
is about one in twenty five. The incidence may be much higher, as people
(even today) will not usually talk freely about the subject. I have only
found about one in twenty to thirty will agree that they have done it
(after taking a careful sexual history). I hope the reticence to talk
about this subject will change in the near future. There is no reason
for this respectable and erotic activity to remain a "closet fetish".
